The Farm

Our Philosophy

At Back Gate Farm we strive to enhance the health of our local community and make our impact on the planet a positive one.  Using sustainable regenerative practices, we grow food that is highly nutritious, delicious, and fun to eat!

We grow our crops using regenerative practices with focus on soil health. We highly recommend reading What Your Food Ate by Anne Bikle and David R. Montgomery, to see why these practices are so important.

We grow our crops organically from heirloom seeds and utilize no-till farming practices.

We use compost made from food scraps by our friends at The Compost Queen to nourish our soil.

We are working closely with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) on conservation planning and best practices.  We are also part of the STAR+ soil health program.

Our crops will be available through a variety of means.  This year we are will be offering a limited number of CSAs. We will also be hosting several “Farm Nights” during the summer where you will be able to visit our farm to celebrate where our food comes from. Microgreens are available all year long through our microgreen subscriptions.

Meet the Farmers

Lisa and Dave Garner have always been health-conscious individuals. Growing up in Colorado, they have always enjoyed an active lifestyle in the great outdoors. Dave was born and raised in Fort Collins- Yes! A true native. Lisa grew up in the Denver area, and like many came to Fort Collins to attend CSU. They now have 3 children who enjoy helping out on the farm.

Wellness and prevention were really pushed to the forefront of their minds when, over a very short period, they lost three out of their four parents to cancer and cardiovascular disease. They felt drawn to revitalize the “old family farm” as they saw the potential to be part of a solution.

They have realized that highly nutritious food is critical for our health and longevity. Through learning about farming, they have become passionate about using regenerative and sustainable practices for both the health of our planet and the nutrient value it adds to our food.

Marilyn Garner, who grew up on the farm property, is one of the growers at Back Gate Farm. She has a Master’s degree in Horticulture from CSU and is thrilled to finally be able to put her passion into action.

Gail Sundell, who also grew up on the farm, is also an integral part of Back Gate Farm.  Her passions have led her to become a renowned sculptor and community advocate.
